Krank Hook
The Krank range of hooks has accounted for countless big carp over the years.
The Korda Krank hook hasn’t been around as long as some of our other patterns but quickly became a favourite of many anglers due to its unique shape.
Korda Krank hooks were developed by Tom Dove back in 2014 and based on an idea that he had for a hook pattern that would literally ‘crank’ its way in when under pressure and after taking an initial hold, thanks to a slightly in-turned and offset beaked point, meaning great hookholds and more fish landed.

A decade later this is still Tom’s first choice of hook in most situations, on set-ups such as his spinner rigs, and there is now even more choice of options with this pattern as an upgraded Krank X version was subsequently added for more extreme angling situations, as well as a Krank Choddy pattern designed for chod rigs, plus a super sharp Kamakura Krank.

Unique shape
This unique shape of hook features an enormous gape coupled with a fairly short aggressive sweeping shank that is curved and sweeps round to the slightly in-turned eye (the Choddy version has the same shape except that it has an out-turned eye to make it suitable for use with chod rigs).

This pattern of hook in its various guises has accounted for loads of big carp, both at home and abroad, and including other species of carp which fight far harder than king carp, such as Siamese carp to over 150lb in Thailand during filming of the Monster Carp show, where it is being used in more extreme fishing conditions.

Even the standard original Krank hook pattern is a very strong hook, and the micro barb ensures that penetration isn’t hindered, but once it is in, then it stays in place.
The Krank is a great all-round hook as it lends itself to so many different rigs and presentations, and is highly effective with everything from a simple knotless knot setup right through to more complicated set-ups like the spinner rigs that Tom Dove loves to use it with.

Different versions of the original Krank
Although it is a strong hook anyway, for the most extreme situations, both at home and abroad, such as when fishing in very snaggy or weedy situations with heavy gear, or on big public lakes abroad for very large carp, then there is a heavier duty ‘X’ version available as well.
It is also available in barbless in all of the variants apart from the ‘X’, should this be your preference or the rules dictate.

THE KRANK RANGE:
Korda Krank
The original version of the Krank pattern is a great all-round hook and such a good hooker of fish, combining strength with great hooking potential and a tendency to stay in once a hookhold has been found.
It features a sharp, slightly in-turned, offset point, coupled with a wide gape and a sweeping shank that curves all the way round to the eye.
The Krank is available in sizes from 2 to 10, in both barbed and barbless versions, and you get ten hooks in a pack.

Korda Krank X
You might find yourself in a situation where you want something even stronger than the standard pattern, and this is where the Krank X comes into play.
It is an incredibly strong hook, constructed using a thicker gauge of wire, but still shares all of the properties of the original Krank which made it so good - a sharp, slightly in-turned, offset point, coupled with a wide gape and a sweeping shank that curves all the way round to the eye.
The Krank X is only available in barbed – due to the type of angling situations and venues you’re likely to be using it on – and comes in sizes from 1 to 8, in packs of ten.

Korda Kamakura Krank
Given how popular and effective the Krank hook pattern had been, once we developed the Kamakura sharpening process to get the perfect, razor-sharp hook points, it made sense to apply that to the Krank.
When you want your hooks to be as sharp as they possibly can be and are changing them after every bite – the extra sharpness means that the point isn’t as durable as the standard version – then the Kamakura Krank is the hook to opt for.
It is available is barbed or barbless versions, in sizes 2 to 8, with ten in a special protective box to keep them in perfect condition until you use them and remove the protective wax coating on the point.

Korda Krank Choddy
The Krank is a great shape for chod fishing as well, but to make it work with the very stiff hook link material that is normally used with this type of rig, a different angle was needed for the hook link to exit the eye.
This led to the development of the Krank Choddy which has all the attributes that made the original Krank so good – a sharp slightly in-turned point; wide gape; and a sweeping curved short shank – but with an out-turned eye to allow the hook to sit perfectly once a chod rig is tied.
It is available in sizes from 4 to 10, in barbed or barbless versions, and comes in packs of ten hooks.
