How To Tie The Slip D Rig

The Slip D is a rig that has been catching carp consistently since its invention. Simple to tie, this rig is suited for using with a wafter or balanced bottom bait and with the addition of a supple D forms a rig that is very effective at hooking fish.

The Slip D-Rig is one of the most effective ways to present a hookbait, especially when you need a setup that resets itself and offers a reliable hook-hold. It has become a staple for many anglers because of its versatility and how well it performs in pressured fishing situations. This guide walks you through exactly how to tie the Slip D-Rig, ensuring you have the right components and technique to tie it with confidence every time.

Step 1

Cut ten inches of N-Trap from the spool and strip back 4 in.

Cut 10 inches of N-Trap Soft from the spool, then use a Strippa Tool to strip back four inches of the coating to leave the braided core exposed.

Step 2

Double over the stripped section and pass it through the eye of your hook

Double over the stripped section of braid hooklink material and pass it through the eye of a Kurv Shank hook (other hook patterns are also suitable) - pass it through the eye of the hook from front to back.

Step 3

Add a Bait Screw or Micro Ring Swivel to the braided loop

Take a Bait Screw Swivel or Micro Ring Swivel and thread that onto the doubled over loop section that is protruding from the back of the eye of your hook.

Step 4

Pass the loop over the point and bend of your hook to lock the bait screw in the right position

Pass the loop around the bend of the hook (once side of the loop on either side of the hook) and over the hook point. Then position the ring on the Bait Screw Swivel (Micro Ring Swivel) opposite the barb of your hook. Then pull both ends of the braid loop from where they protrude from the front of the eye, and so that the Bait Screw (Micro Ring Swivel) is held in position on the loop.

Step 5

Secure everything with a knotless knot to form a 'D' on the hook shank

Secure everything in place using a knotless knot – you will be left with a D on the hook with the Bait Screw able to run up and down on it. You should be left with a small section of supple braid between the eye of your hook and where the coating starts on your hook link. Trim the tag end.

Step 6

Thread a piece of shrink tube down your hook link and over the hook eye, so it covers the knot and forms a kicker

Take 10mm of shrink tube – of a size suitable to match the hook size you’ve chosen – and use a baiting needle to thread this onto the end of hook link and push it down until it sits neatly over the hook eye and knotless knot – part of the stripped braided part of your hook link should still be visible and provide a hinge.

Step 7

Thread a Dark Matter Anti Tangle Sleeve onto the other end of your hook link

Slide a Dark Matter Anti Tangle Sleeve onto the end of your hook link, thin end first. Then measure the rig to the desired length and tie a figure-of-eight loop knot – this can be used in conjunction with any Quick Change swivel or Hybrid Lead Clip QC.

Step 8

Steam the shrink tubing and create an angle to help the hook flip over aggressively

Steam the shrink tubing, holding the hook and the other end of the rig, so that you can put an angle in the shrink tube as you steam it – this will help the hook to flip over more aggressively. Also use the steam to straighten the coated braid, so it will lay flat on the lake bed.

Step 9

Attach your hook bait, and if using a pop-up, counter-balance it with rig putty

Attach your hook bait by screwing it onto the Bait Screw (or if you prefer you can use a micro ring swivel and Bait Floss instead – just replace the bait screw with this). This rig can be used with pop-ups or wafters – if using a pop-up, mould a small piece of Dark Matter Putty around the point where the coated braid ends, using enough to counter balance your hook bait the way you want. Now simply attach the finished rig to your QC swivel and pull the Dark Matter Anti Tangle Sleeve over it to secure it in place.
