Ready made carp rigs
Ready-tied carp rigs these days are as good as many anglers can tie themselves. Here is everything you need to know about them.
Ready tied carp rigs – how good are they?
Ready tied rigs in the past were often very basic and not particularly good, but all that has changed and these days you can use a rig out of a packet that is as effective as what you can tie yourself.
Ready made carp rigs can be anything from the simplest hair rig right the way through to more complicated presentations such as spinner/Ronnie rigs and hinge rigs, and what all of the rigs in the Korda range have in common is that they are tied using components and to a standard where you can be sure that they won’t let you down when playing a carp.
Why use ready made carp rigs?
Whilst ready-tied rigs for carp fishing are perfect for beginners who don't yet have the confidence to tie their own rigs from scratch, they are also a popular choice with many other anglers as well, and are suitable tools for anglers of all abilities.
Some don’t have the spare time to spend tying their own rigs in advance of a session and want things to be as simple as possible when they arrive at the lake, and they can just get a rig out of the packet – or from their RigSafe if they have one that they’ve used previously and hook is still sharp – attach it on to whatever lead system they are using, add their choice of hook bait, and cast it out.
There are also anglers, especially those who are older or who suffer with dexterity issues with their hands and fingers, who are unable to easily tie more complicated rigs themselves and who struggle to put all the components together, and so these ready rigs are perfect for them. Especially as there are options within the Korda range just to buy separate hook sections for rigs such as the combi rig, plus the booms which have already been crimped and just need the other components to be added.
Korda is a leading brand in carp rigs in the UK and these ready made carp rigs are also great if you want to try a different type of rig for the first time and don't want to go out and buy all the components that you need to construct it – the ready rigs allow you to try it out and see if you want to actually start using it for your fishing.
What ready tied carp rigs are available?
These days you are spoilt for choice, and whether you are looking for a bottom bait, wafter, or pop-up presentation you will be able to find a ready rig which is ideal for that.
Long gone are the days where a ready tied rig basically meant a hook knotless knotted onto a piece of braid of around eight inches long, which not only wasn’t very versatile due to the hair being a set length and meaning the gap from the hook was determined by the size of your bait, but also wasn’t very effective at hooking carp, and was prone to tangling whenever you cast out.
These days professionally tied carp rigs are made to exact specifications that have been set by top anglers and using the components that they themselves use for their own fishing, and Korda rigs are known for their quality and effectiveness.
You can even get Zig Rigs which come supplied on EVA spools and in a choice of 6ft, 8ft, 10ft, or 12ft, so you can easily change the depth you’re fishing at and set your rig at the height you want. All you have to do is attach the loop at one end onto a QC swivel and away you go, and with three on a spool, plus three different coloured pieces of foam for hookbaits also supplied, you can quickly have three rods in the water and fishing with zigs.
So however you are fishing, you will be able to find a rig which is just right for the situation, and thanks to the use of our Extenda Stops, which come supplied with the rigs where they might be of use, you can also use any size of hookbait you want without negatively impacting on the mechanics of the rig.
Carp rigs ready made for pop ups
The Ronnie rig, or spinner rig, is one of the most widely used rigs these days, but some anglers don’t have the confidence in using crimps themselves, or struggle with some of the more fiddly components.
Korda now sell this popular rig in various guises in our ready rig range, where you can buy the complete rig, with either a Krank or Kurv hook already attached to the boom section, and can literally just tie a hookbait on with bait floss and you’re ready to cast out. The hook can still be changed for a new one if you need to.
For those who want a bit more versatility, you can buy separate booms, in a choice of 5.5in. or 7.5in. and tied on our popular Boom material, using small neat loop knots and with a spinner swivel at one end and a loop at the other for easy attachment to your lead system. We even do a heavier duty version for those fishing overseas or in weedy and snaggy conditions, which is set up on a 35lb Boom with a Spinner Swivel XX for extra strength.
If it is setting up the hook end of the rig which you either find too fiddly or aren’t confident in doing it yourself, then you can buy these already set up and in a choice of Spinner or Krank hooks, with a spinner ring swivel attached and so all you need to do is crimp it to a boom yourself.
The multi rig is another very popular presentation as it is so easy to change the hook when you need to, without having to use a whole new rig, and the Korda one with a Krank Choddy hook and Kamo coated braid hook link sits perfectly when used with pop-ups.
Stiff hinge rigs have been used to land lots of big carp and are good way of fishing a pop-up higher off the bottom that you would with a Ronnie rig, but some anglers aren’t sure how to tie them. Now you don’t have to as there is a ready tied version set up using a Choddy hook and Mouth Trap, and with an IQ fluorocarbon boom section.
The same goes for chod rigs, which are designed for fishing over weed or silt, and can also be awkward to tie due to the very stiff material that is used with them, and which now come in packs of three, in a choice of either long or short – depending how far you want to pop your bait up off the bottom – and with various sizes of Choddy hook available, and a suitable hook link breaking strain to match. Just thread the ring swivel of the chod rig onto your helicopter set up and you're ready to cast out.
Ready tied bottom bait and wafter carp rigs
There are so many different bottom bait and wafter rigs that it would be impossible to produce all of them as a ready rig, but Korda have picked out some of the favourites, including ones that are favoured by the likes of Danny Fairbrass, Darrell peck and other Team Korda anglers.
If you do just want a standard hair rig, then several options are available, include a budget one within the Basix range, which is tied using coated braid and a Wide Gape hook also from that range.
Or you could go for a rig tied on Dark Matter braid using a Wide Gape hook, and which is set up using shrink tubing so that it turns aggressively, and is based on one of Neil Spooner’s favourite rigs.
If you’re looking for something a bit different to a conventional hair rig, then there are plenty of options, including a blowback style DF rig tied on our popular N-Trap coated braid, and which is tied to Danny Fairbrass’ own specifications. Or why not try another favourite of his, the IQ D-rig which is made from IQ fluorocarbon and has featured on numerous films over the years. Even slightly more obscure rigs such as a KD presentation are available to use straight out of the packet.
Aside from the spinner rig, the combi rig is one of the most popular set ups these days, but some anglers can find it complicated to tie themselves. To make it very easy to use, Korda have produced a range of Loops and Booms – which are basically boom sections of different lengths, and separate packs of hooks, in various patterns and sizes, that are already attached to a braided loop and with a hair on the hook, with a choice of different set ups including blowback style.
Using these Loops and Booms couldn’t be more simple and all you have to do is attach the hook section to the boom using the loop-to-loop method for a secure attachment.
Fans of solid PVA bag fishing needn’t feel left out either, as the Solidz PVA Bag Rig is perfect for this style of fishing and is just the right length, and with three rigs in the pack, you can have a couple of spare bags tied up ready to cast out as well.
Top quality components and construction are used on carp ready rigs
Whilst some carp anglers might look down on ready rigs, the reality is that these days they are tied so well that many anglers would struggle to match that themselves, and you can be sure that these rigs won’t let you down due to avoidable issues such as knot failures.
They’ve been designed by top carp anglers, including Danny Fairbrass, to mimic the rigs that they use themselves, but in a way that any angler can just buy a packet and tie it on, and to all intents and purposes be fishing with the same set up as some of the most successful carpers around today.
This means that each rig is tied exactly the same, every time, and so will work just as it is supposed to do and offer you optimum performance, with perfect knots or crimping for a rig that is as neat as anybody could tie themselves.
You can also be sure that the components won’t let you down as they are exactly the same ones that you would be buying if you were making the rigs yourself, and utilise all of our best hooks, hook link materials and other rig bits, to ensure that these rigs won’t fail you when you have a big carp on the end.
To see just how effective these ready rigs are in action, Neil Spooner puts a variety of them through their paces in a Masterclass film, and shows that they certainly won’t be detrimental to your catch rate, if you use them correctly.
