Zig Kit
Adjustable zig rigs are brilliant in certain situations and this is the ultimate way of setting one up
Zig fishing is an extremely effective style of fishing, and especially so at certain times of year such as late winter and throughout the spring.
When the carp are spending large periods of time in the upper layers and rarely feeding on the bottom, then it makes sense to present a bait where they are, and this is where zig rigs come into play, and you’re missing a trick if you don’t use them.

Contrary to the belief of some, zig rigs actually work on harder waters as well and have accounted for some very big carp, including for our Team Korda anglers, and so shouldn’t be viewed as a method for easier, higher stock lakes.
Fishing a traditional style of zig, with a long hook link and bait popped up straight off of your lead system can present all sorts of problems when it comes to casting it out and even more so when landing fish – not easy when your lead clip is 20ft further up your line from where the fish is and can’t be wound through your tip ring!

Better in deeper water than a traditional zig rig
The Korda Zig Floats solve this problem though, and the Zig Kit that they are part of includes all the components that you need to set up an adjustable zig rig, which not only makes it much easier to fish zigs in deeper water, but also allows you to adjust the depth at which they are set without having to recast and potentially spook fish in your swim.
An adjustable zig basically involves your main line running through a lead and being attached to some sort of float that can be popped up to the desired depth, and with a fairly short hook link – typically around 4ft so it is far enough away from the float not to alert carp to it being ‘dangerous’ but still short enough that landing fish is easy, even with the running lead still attached during the fight (typically traditional zigs are fished with a clip so that the lead is ejected easily).

The Korda Zig Kit has been designed by experts on zig fishing
The Zig Kit has been designed – with the involvement of Tom Dove who is an expert when it comes to this style of fishing – so as to make it as easy and effective as possible to fish adjustable zigs, and simply by attaching a hook link baited with your chosen hookbait, and a lead, you are ready to cast out. No need to even know what is in front of you in terms of features and depths, as long as your are putting your zig where the carp are.

The Zig Float itself is precision blow-moulded and is the ideal shape both for casting, and also providing enough buoyancy to be able to feel it when letting it up to the surface – that is very important in situations where you can’t see the float actually reaching the surface, such as at night or in windy weather.
Different sizes of Zig Float for different situations
Two different sizes of Zig Float are available, medium and large, so you can pick the one most suited to the fishing situation – you don’t want it to be larger and more obtrusive than necessary, but if fishing at longer range, in deep water, and potentially with undertow, then the larger, more buoyant version will be the one to go for.

The float easily threads onto your main line, through the centre of it (from the thin end first), and features a rubber insert at the fatter end which neatly holds a size 11 QC swivel in place – this swivel turns very freely and keeps your hook link from twisting. A clear anti-tangle sleeve is supplied to go over this QC swivel and also helps to prevent twist in your hook link.
A virtually tangle-free way of fishing zigs
If your hook link is twisted or tangled when you cast it out, then there is a good chance that it still will be once it is in the water. A lot of that is prevented via the design of this kit, whereby you use a piece of dissolving foam which is licked and stuck to the float and then your hookbait is attached to that (or some prefer to wrap PVA string or tape around the float to achieve the same thing.

With your hookbait attached to the float – albeit it temporarily until in the water and the PVA melts – there is no danger of it tangling around anything, but the big loop that this creates in your hook link can become twisted. It is important to remove any twist and ensure the hook link loop is completely open prior to casting, and the ball bearing swivel helps with that as it can smoothly and easily be twizzled around until any twist has gone and you’re ready to cast out.

Allows you to adjust the depth without recasting
The great thing about an adjustable zig is that you don’t even know what the depth is, you can simply cast it out, pop your float up to the surface - either suing binoculars to see it or by feel and when line stops being pulled through your fingers by the float popping up – and then gradually pull it down 1ft at a time. If your hook link is 4ft long, then once you’ve pulled the float down 4ft, you know your hookbait is just on the surface and you can then continue to pull it down to your desired depth. If you wish to try a different depth, rather than having to recast you can just pull it down further or let out some line.

Purpose designed lead system makes it easy for the Zig Float to rise
For this to work and the float to pop up, your main line needs to be able to run freely through the lead set up, and if you mount your lead directly on the line and cast it into thick silt or bottom weed/debris then it is possible that it won’t be able to pull line through the lead.

The Korda Zig Kit comes supplied with a special stem that your lead attaches to at one end – via a ball bearing swivel to enable rapid rotation during the cast – and at the other end is a hard-wearing ring which your main goes through, plus a small polyball to keep that ring clear of debris on the bottom, but not so large that it overly impacts on casting distance.
Each Zig Kit, medium or large, includes a Zig Float; an anti-tangle sleeve; a size 11 QC swivel; and a lead boom.
