Spinner Hook

Why is this hook pattern so good and why does it work so well with a Ronnie rig

The Korda range of hooks covers all sorts of different shapes and patterns, so whatever type of rig you are looking to use, and mechanics you want to achieve, you will find one that is just right for the job.

Some of the hooks in the range get a lot more attention than others though, especially patterns such as the Wide Gape and Krank that have been around for years and have a big following of anglers who have complete confidence in them, and this means that some really good ones are often largely missed or under-used by the masses.

The Korda spinner hook is the ideal choice to use when fishing with a Ronnie rig

Even within Team Korda that is very much the case, and you will see the same anglers using the same couple of patterns for most of their fishing, and of course, there is nothing wrong with that as confidence plays a huge part in carp fishing.

One pattern that gets far less attention than it deserves is the Spinner hook, which has been around for a while now, and often when anglers try it with one of the rigs it is designed to be used with, they are often surprised just how good the Spinner is and can’t believe they had ignored it previously – that has been very much the case even with Danny Fairbrass himself who is now a big fan of the pattern in the right situations.

What rigs work best with a Korda Spinner hook?

As the name suggest, this hook pattern was specifically designed for use with the spinner rig, also known as a Ronnie rig, and has been designed to help provide the perfect mechanics for converting more pick-ups into hooked carp, and more fish on the bank.

The Ronnie rig, or spinner, is the most widely used carp rig around and is renowned for its ease of use, resistance to tangling due to the stiff hook link material used, as well as being a highly effective catcher of carp of all sizes, both at home and abroad, to the extent that for some anglers such as Tom Dove, it is pretty much what they always fish with, unless the situation really dictates the use of something else.

The Spinner hook has been purposely designed to work perfectly with a Ronnie rig, but is also suitable with other presentations as well

There will of course be other rigs that work well with this hook as well, given its aggressive shape and long, razor sharp straight point.

Why does this hook work so well with a spinner rig?

A Ronnie rig works on the basis that the hook can freely spin around and take a hold in the mouth of the carp – ideally the bottom lip if you have got everything just right with your set-up – as soon as a carp picks up the hook bait and the hook link tightens.

It also has the big advantages of being incredibly easy to construct via a couple of crimps; the ability to be able to change the hook very quickly and easily whenever a new one is required; and the ability of this rig to re-set itself after it has been picked up and ejected (no rig is 100 per cent effective at hooking a fish every time) so that you know that it is always out there and fishing effectively, which combined together is why so many anglers use it so much.

The Spinner hook flips over very fast and takes a hold in the mouth due to its aggressive shape

With this type of rig you are relying on a carp initially pricking itself and then bolting, and most of the time it is used with pop-ups or wafters – although it can be used with bottom baits as well, including on a hair – so an aggressively shaped hook works well and is the ideal choice.

What features make the Spinner hooks mechanics so effective at hooking carp?

The Spinner hook has an eye that is in-turned at an aggressive 55 degrees, which not only helps to make it spin around and turn when picked up by a fish, but does so in combination with one of the Korda Kickers that is normally used with this rig, and is the perfect angle for that kicker to act as a continuation of the hook shape and so the rig sits in the optimum position with a buoyant hook bait, and to act aggressively.

In addition to the mechanics in terms of the way the hook will move, it has also been designed to give the best possible hooking potential when being attached to a Spinner Swivel and the eye covered with a kicker, thanks to a long and curved shank which opens up the gape and increases the chances of it finding a hold in the mouth of a carp.

The angle of the eye is just right to follow the shape of a kicker when connecting the hook to a spinner swivel

If the Spinner hook does rotate and take an initial hold as intended, the long, razor sharp, straight point, coupled with a small barb and a durable PTFE coating, will easily penetrate, whilst still being durable enough that it won’t easily blunt during normal use.

Is a full range of sizes available in the Spinner hook pattern?

Whilst some anglers prefer to use a large hook with a Ronnie rig, even when using smaller baits, plenty of other people prefer to match the two or to scale down during the winter months and use a more subtle set-up.

A range of sizes, including intermediate ones, are available in the Spinner hook pattern, as well as barbed and barbless versions

To enable you to get just the right size of hook for each situation, the Spinner pattern also comes in intermediate sizes 5 and 7, as well as the more standard sizes 2, 4, 6, and 8.

Whatever type of venue and size of carp you are fishing for, you can use the Spinner hooks as they come in both barbed or barbless versions, and so are suitable for any water, whatever the rules.
