Korda Mouth Trap
A hook link material specially designed for chod rigs
Chod rigs can be used at any time of the year, but are particularly effective during the spring when the carp are first starting to wake up and you are casting to showing fish, without putting much bait out.
That doesn’t mean though that they don’t have uses at other times of the year, and that is especially the case on shallower, weedy lakes, when fishing for wary carp, and where you want to be able to flick a couple of rigs out into areas where there are signs of carp, but don’t want to risk spooking them by having multiple casts.

The big advantage with a chod is that it is pretty much always presented and fishing, wherever it lands, and allows you to fish very effectively on top of weed or thick silt.
Over the years this method has accounted for countless big carp, including from some of the hardest lakes in the country, but for chod rigs to be effective, they need to be tied with the right material, and that is where Korda Mouth Trap comes into play.

Stiff material hook link material
For a chod rig to work effectively you want to be using a stiff material, which almost acts like an extension of the hook shank and helps the hook to take a hold.
The reason for this is that by the time a chod is cast out and has settled against the top bead of your Naked Chod Safety System or No-Trace Bead – depending on whether you’re fishing a naked chod or using some sort of leader – it is a long way from the lead and you’re largely relying on the tension in your line when the carp takes your pop-up and lifts its mouth up.

Mouth Trap is very stiff, compared to its breaking strain and this makes it ideal for chod rigs, with a choice of 15lb, 20lb or 25lb breaking strains, depending on the fishing situation.
Korda Mouth Trap has a high memory
With any other type of monofilament line the last thing you want is for it to have a high memory, as this causes all sorts of problems with the way that it behaves.
But for chods exactly the opposite it true as you want to be able to achieve the perfect curve to your hook link, which aids the chances of your hook taking a hold, and this is why Mouth Trap actually has a high memory.
Whilst most other stiff materials – such as Korda Boom which is incredibly popular with Ronnie rigs and spinner rigs – will immediately spring back after being bent or manipulated, that isn’t the case with Mouth Trap.

You can take it off of the spool and it can be pulled straight with your fingers, without the need for steaming or the use of Pulla Tools, and then manipulate it into the exact shape that you want.
This can be done using either your fingers or the specially designed handle that comes as part of your Chod Safe rig storage system, and gives the perfect curve to your rigs every time if steamed whilst wrapped around it.
Once bent into shape, Mouth Trap will stay like that even after being cast out, or stored prior to use.

Easy to knot
Whilst Mouth Trap looks like it will be a nightmare to knot due to its stiffness, that isn’t actually the case and it can easily be attached to your chosen hook (one with an out-turned eye such as a Krank Choddy, so that it sits correctly) via a knotless knot (you don’t need many turns, six or seven is enough), and a neat D-rig presentation can be formed using a specially designed Chod-It Tool.

Attaching your chod rig to the helicopter style swivel on your main line or leader couldn’t be easier, with a simple overhand knot being enough to secure it – the high memory means that it will hold even when under extreme pressure and won’t slip or try to come undone.
Also great for hinged stiff rigs
This stiff, high memory, subtle green tinged hook link material is labelled as ‘chod filament’ and whilst that is mainly what it was designed for, it is also a great choice for those who like to fish with hinged stiff rigs.

Korda Mouth Trap is ideal for tying the part of a hinged stiff link which pop-ups at the hook end, as like with a chod, it can be manipulated into the exact shape that you want, and will also hold that shape. Whatever you use it for, with 20m on a spool you will get a lot of rigs from it!
