How to tie Darrell Peck's combi multi rig

Detailed step-by-step instructions of exactly how to tie the rig, just like Darrell does himself.

When an angler like Darrell Peck swears by a certain rig and uses it for a lot of his fishing, you know that he has to think that it works better than anything else out there.

Of course, some of this comes down to personal preference and all top anglers have rigs that they have total confidence in using.

The multi combi rig is Darrell's first choice when fishing with a balanced bait, plus it has excellent reset properties

With the types of venue that Darrell tends to fish, both at home and abroad, which tend to either have very big carp, are rock hard with bites few and far between, or a combination of the two, he has to be using something that he has total confidence in, and if a carp does pick it up, there is a high chance of hooking it and also of landing it – this is a rig that Darrell is very confident in when it comes to hookholds, and once a fish is on he doesn’t lose many.

The combi rig has been around for decades, and the multi rig is also nothing new, but by combining the two, Darrell has come up with a way to fish a combi rig which easily allows you to change the hook, rather than having to construct a new rig, and over several years has played about with every aspect of the rig – including the length of both the boom and supple braided sections – to come up with what he views as the ultimate presentation for fishing with balanced/slow sinking or wafter type hookbait, which are what works most effectively with it.

A combi multi rig Darrell Peck style, and although it could be used with bottom baits, it is far more effective with a balanced bait with some buoyancy

With a balanced bait the hook lays flat on the bottom with the hookbait sat over the top of it, so from above the hook is pretty much hidden from the view of a carp. Plus it means that it resets itself very well if it does get ejected by a fish when there is an aborted take.

Here we take a detailed look of exactly how to tie the rig, just like Darrell does himself.

What you will need to tie this rig

25lb Slip-D Braid

25lb Boom

Hybrid Lead Clip

Wide Gape X hook (Darrell uses a size 6 in most situations)

Combi-Multi Kickers (medium if using a size 6)

0.7mm Silicone tubing

0.6mm Krimp

Micro Ring Swivel (medium)

Mini Krimp Tool

Splicing needle

Braided Hair needle

Razor Blade scissors

Pulla Tool

Bait Floss

Lighter (for blobbing the floss)

For this type of combi multi rig, Slip D braid is perfect and what Darrell Peck prefers to use these days and fits his bespoke requirements

Take eight inches of 25lb Korda Slip-D Braid, cut it from the spool and fold it in half to form a loop.

Step 2

Korda Boom fluorocarbon is used to form the stiff boom section of the combi multi rig

Pass the end of the braided loop through a loop in some 25lb Korda Boom, which is formed by doubling over the end of the Boom material and holding it with your fingers to create the loop.

Step 3

Darrell has played around with different lengths to get the braided hook section just right and has settled on a slip d section of 2.5cm once the rig is tied

Using a RigSafe, or similar, measure it so that there is 2.5cm between the two loops – basically so 2.5cm of the braided loop is protruding through the loop in the Boom material.

Step 4

Glossary

more
An Albright knot is used to attach the braided loop and it is that which makes this rig quick change

Now tie an Albright knot to join the two different hook link materials together, making sure you’ve kept the braided loop 2.5cm long. To do this, simply wrap both the tag ends of the braid, around both sides of the Boom loop. Do this four times, keeping the wraps as tight as possible, then take the two tag ends and pass them through the Boom loop, in the same direction as your braided loop (similar to how you would go through the eye of a hook when tying a knotless knot).

more
Make sure you pass the tag ends back through the loop the correct way otherwise the knot will slip and come undone

Step 5

Glossary

Test

This is a test definition

more
Tighten the Albright knot using a Korda Pulla Tool

Tighten the knot initially by hand and bed it down neatly. Then take a Pulla Tool and insert it into the braided loop, taking the boom in your other hand, and pulling hard to make sure the knot is fully tightened and can’t slip. At this stage, if you have tied it incorrectly you will know as the knot will either give way and slip, or you will see the wraps of braid starting to pull off the end of the boom loop. If in doubt, re-tie it. Once tightened, your braided loop section should be 3.5cm long – the optimal length that Darrell has found for it after experimenting. Trim the tag ends of the knot.

Step 6

Darrell Peck uses a piece of silicone tubing to cover the knot and make everything neater

Take a 12mm long piece of 0.7mm silicone tubing and thread it onto a splicing needle, and then onto the end of the braided loop. Pull it over the knot joining the braid to the boom, to keep everything looking neat.

Step 7

Darrell uses this combi rig in conjunction with a Hybrid lead clip, where practical to do so, and crimps the boom to it

Cut off the Boom material from the spool, leaving plenty enough that you can crimp the boom section to exactly five inches long. To do this, simply pass the Boom material through one barrel of a small 0.6mm Krimp, the through the eye of the ring swivel on a Hybrid lead clip, back through the other barrel of the crimp, and tease it into position until the boom section is exactly the right length.

Step 8

Darrell Peck likes to use a small Korda Krimp in the large slot on the Mini Krimp Tool as he finds that he gets a better, more secure connection

Take a Krimp Tool and place the crimp in the large groove – not the small one! – and squeeze tight. Darrel personally finds that he is much happier with his crimping when the small Krimp is crushed in the large grove and gives a finish that he is totally confident in. Trim the tag to leave 3-4mm protruding from the crimp. Straighten the rig by using a Pulla Tool in the braided loop and holding the lead clip in your other hand, and pulling, The rig is now constructed – and can be re-used multiple times - and all you need to do is add the hook and hook bait.

Pull the hook link tight to straighten it, you don't even need to use steam to do this and if not using immediately, store it in a way where it can't get kinked

Step 9

more
Darrell used to use shrink tubing, but now there is a dedicated Combi-Multi Kicker in the Korda range

Take a medium size Combi-Multi Kicker (or one suitable for the size of hook if using something different to Darrell) and use a Korda braided hair needle to make a pilot hole in the side of the rubber kicker at the thinner end, which will be used to fish it line aligner style.

Step 10

Glossary

Test

This is a test definition

more
The Combi-Multi Kicker is easy to thread on and to line align, which helps the hook to flip over and take a hold

Use a splicing needed to go through the kicker from the fatter end and out through the side of it at the thin end, via the pilot hole that you made, and then thread it onto the braided loop part of your hook link.

Step 11

Glossary

more
Thread the end of the braided loop through the eye of a Wide Gape X hook, from front to back

Take a size 6 Wide Gape X hook and pass the braided loop through the eye of it, from front to back, before pushing the Combi-Multi Kicker over the eye of the hook to hold everything in place. Pull the braided loop until the kicker buffers up against the piece of silicone over you hook link knot – this will give you enough braid to complete the ‘multi’ part of this rig.

Step 12

Darrell likes to make hook baits up in advance already mounted on micro ring swivels

Take a pre-made hook bait, that you have mounted onto a medium size micro ring swivel, using Bait Floss – double over a 3in. piece of floss and thread it through the eye of the swivel (not the ring), slide your bait onto it, then simply trim and blob the tag ends to hold it in place. Thread this onto the end of the braided loop, then pass the end of the loop over the hook point to secure it multi rig style. To change the hook, simply repeat these last few steps.

It is easy to attach the hook securely, multi rig style

Step 13

Glossary

Test

This is a test definition

more
To complete Darrell Peck's combi multi rig, make sure the hook bait is sitting opposite the barb

Finally pull the on the hook link to adjust the positioning of the braided loop on the hook, so that your hook bait sits opposite the barb. You’re all ready to cast out – just remember not to try and add anything to the hook, such as a PVA bag or stringer, as that can cause the hook to detach from the kicker, due to the extra weight and drag that is caused (in the absence of that, the kicker can never come off of the hook in a normal fishing situation).

You can watch the full Masterclass explaining exactly how he uses this rig and why it is constructed the way that it is, after lots of trial and error by Darrell. He also shows you exactly how to tie the rig as well, if you find that easier to follow than the images here.
