12: PLATINUM FOR LONG RANGE FISHING
Long range fishing has very much become a part of modern carp angling, and these days people regularly fish at ranges that could only have been dreamed of in the past.
When we talk about long range fishing, that really means anything of 100 yards and over, as whilst some might be fishing at crazy distances, even approaching 200 yards, for most anglers that isn’t the case and being able to fish consistently at 25 wraps, or a bit more, is all they really need.
Making the power of Platinums accessible to anybody
Building a range of rods that, in theory, are capable of putting a lead and rig crazy distances isn’t actually that hard, if you are happy for only a handful of anglers to actually be able to unlock and make use of the power, and for them to feel awful to play fish on.
Designing rods though that anybody can pick up, cast and see a marked improvement in their distance, whilst also maintaining accuracy, and which are enjoyable to play fish on as well, is much harder though, and is why it took us four years to get the Kaizen Platinum just right, so that we were happy that we’d produced the best range of rods that we could.
Part of that focus was definitely on producing rods that could cast a long way when you need to – with measured casts in excess of 200 yards recorded – and is why the fast taper action that they have was chosen, as that is perfect for distance casting, when matched with the right material, like the ZERO90 carbon that is used in the Platinum blanks.
How will the Kaizen Platinum actually improve my fishing?
The reality is though that very few anglers are fishing at these sorts of distances on a regular basis, and whilst out-and-out distance numbers look good on paper when in the hands of a very accomplished caster, that doesn’t actually mean a lot to the average angler on the bank who is looking for a rod that will actually improve their own fishing.
One of the biggest factors in Danny Fairbrass wanting to do a range of rods in the first place, was his desire to design something that helped anglers to catch more fish.
Being able to consistently and accurately fish on a spot, whatever the weather decides to do, plays a big part in that, and much more so than the absolute maximum distance a rod can achieve, and which will rarely ever be utilised.
That is exactly what the Platinum range provides, rods that offer a high and very consistent level of performance, whatever range you are fishing at, and which, when you really need to, can be pushed to the limits in terms of casting distance, depending on which length and test curve you go for.
Consistency is the key
This means that you are still getting the full benefit from choosing a high end rod like the Platinum, whatever situation you are using it in, and will notice the difference.
So before focussing solely on range alone, read Casting distance vs casting control.
For those who are planning to fish at very long ranges on a regular basis, these rods, especially in the 4lb test curve versions, will do everything you expect from them, and more, and with as little effort as possible.
Hit your spots accurately in any weather
As you will have seen in many of the Korda videos, where our anglers are using them to comfortably fish at 35 wraps, and well beyond in some cases, and are doing so in varying weather conditions as well, and the type of situations you are actually going to find yourself in out on the bank.
So whether you find yourself on a lake that has a minimum line diameter and are using a tapered main line to hit the range you need; or the wind suddenly picks up and is blowing across your swim, making it harder to cast and requiring a bigger lead, the Platinum rods will allow you to do that and still fish at long range very accurately.
The best way to choose the right rod for you is to go and handle it in person by using our store locator to find your nearest Korda stockist.
