16: Handle design and usability on Green rods

When we designed the Kaizen Green range of rods we wanted them to have a custom build look, but whilst cosmetics were important, all of the fittings used on the rods had to serve a practical purpose as well.

Hand position is very important for casting

One of the biggest factors when it comes to casting is the positioning of your hands on the rod, and being able to grip it securely enough that you can put every ounce of your strength into the cast without fear of it slipping from your grasp.

These needs to be the same even if your hands are wet, cold, or covered in spod mix, so we chose a Japanese shrink wrap material to cover the handle, which allows for a very good grip, but without overly increasing the diameter and allowing for a good grip, whatever size your hands are.

Flared handle ensures a very secure and comfortable grip

This is enhanced by the use of a flared section right at the end of the butt, which again, enhances grip, thanks to its slightly wider diameter, whilst also helping to ensure that the rod can’t slip through your hand.

The length of the handle is also important, and whilst that can vary depending on the angler and your casting style, we have chosen a length that suits the vast majority of anglers and feels comfortable to use for casting and allows you to really punch through the cast and generate as much tip speed as possible – if the handle is too long it feels cumbersome, and too short means your hands aren’t far enough apart to fully compress the blank. Whatever your build and casting ability, the Kaizen Green rods will feel comfortable in your hands when you are using them.

Why handle length is so important

That handle length for casting also needs to be balanced with something that is practical and feels comfortable for playing fish on, where a longer handle can get in the way and get caught up in your clothing, making it harder to quickly switch the angle the rod is at when you suddenly need to, such as applying side strain. The handle on the 10ft rods is shorter to reflect the fact that they will often be used in a boat, and this shorter length makes it much easier and less cumbersome.

A DPS style reel seat won't come loose during use

The handle is finished off with a Sea-Guide DPS style reel seat, that will lock your reel securely in place and won’t accidentally come undone during use – you definitely don’t want your reel becoming detached from the rod suddenly during a fight!

The end of the rod butt is protected by a stylish butt cap with a green Korda ‘glasses’ logo on it, and in front of the butt grip there is a subtle ‘Green’ logo that fits in with the style of the rest of the rod, including its low glare, matt finish.
