10: KAIZEN GREEN SPOD RODS EXPLAINED
In most carp fishing situations you are going to want to be able to get some bait around your rigs, and a lot of the time these days that involves the use of some sort of spod or spomb.
So, it wouldn’t have made sense not to include a spod rod within the Green range, and in the end we opted for three different lengths – 12ft, 12ft 6in., and 13ft – so that you can match it to the length of rods that you are fishing with. Consistently casting with rods all of the same length makes much more sense in terms of having a good feel for getting them out to your spot, rather than having to keep on adjusting your casting action to take account of varying lengths.
All of these rods are capable of casting larger sized spods and spombs, even when filled with particles, and incredible distances can be achieved with more of a midi size that gives the perfect casting weight for really launching it.
You will be able to cast at least as far as you can with your fishing rods, and much more effortlessly, which is what we were trying to achieve, given much time is spent spodding and how tiring it can be with the wrong kit.
Baiting up is about far more than just hitting the distance, and accuracy is incredibly important, as every time you land a cast in the wrong place, you’ve just spread a pile of bait there.
These rods have an extremely fast taper, even more so than the fishing rods, with the focus being on power and accuracy – you aren’t playing fish on them, so there is no need to make the tip more forgiving. The aim is for as much of the effort that you put into the cast as possible to be transferred through to the spod, and when released, it flies in as straight a line as possible and goes where you were aiming. The construction of the blank and the type of carbon used allows for highly efficient power transfer, as well as minimising lateral twist.
The 13ft version is the most powerful, as you would expect as the extra length helps to generate faster tip speed and more power, but only if you can utilise that – if you are fishing with shorter rods than this, such as a 12ft or 12ft 6in., then the chances are you will feel more comfortable with a spod rod of the same length. These rods have also become popular with Platinum rod owners who are looking for a more economical spod and marker rod that will cast as far as they need – which these will do with ease, given the lighter spod braid being used with them.
The Kaizen Green spod rods feature Sea-Guide TDG twin leg stainless rings throughout, with a 50mm butt guide tapering down to a 16mm tip ring, that is large enough for a leader knot to easily pass through it, and also features a ceramic lining that has been designed to withstand constant use with braid and won’t wear.
Cosmetically, they have the same custom look as the fishing rods, with a Sea-Guide DPS style seat to lock your reel securely in place, and a flared handle that allows for a good grip even with hands that are wet or covered in spod mix, which is further enhanced by the use of Japanese shrink wrap.
Whilst these rods are designed for spodding, they also make the perfect marker rods as well, and allow you to easily feature find at the sort of ranges that you are fishing and baiting at – after all there is little point in being able to get your rigs and bait right out into the lake, if you have no idea of what type of bottom you are fishing over, nor how deep it is.
